Telephone
Telephone cards ("Crédifones") can be bought at many places. It is also possible to call from the Post Offices (not as cheap as phonecards), try not to use the telephone in your hotelroom or apartment, very expensive! Code from the U.K to Portugal.: 00351 and vice versa 0044.
Theft
The Algarve is not known for a high crime rate, but theft from cars is quite common. Keep valuables out of site or take them with you! In your room, because of the weather it's always tempting to leave windows open make sure you lock them before you go out! (even just to the pool)
Transport
Buses Local services are not often on time, the regional services are quite reliable, comfortable and inexpensive ( Albufeira-Lissabon approx. ? 17). Albufeira-Lissabon, for example, takes about 4 hours, so allow plenty of time for bus trips!
Trains are reliable and cheap (Albufeira - Lisbon 2nd class about € 14) time tables vary so pick up a schedule from a station or Phone: 808 208 208
Traffic
Portugal and especially the Algarve has the highest accident rate in Europe. They never keep to the speed limits and they overtake at the most unlikely places. The new motorway (tollfree!!) in the Algarve from Lagos to Faro, and further to Spain, has helped but the EN125 is still a dangerous road.. Some traffic rules: Within the built-up area: 60km outside the built-up area: 90km, Main roads: 100km Motorways: 120km. At unmarked junctions give way to traffic from the right. The wearing of seatbells is compulsory. Alcohol 50mg per 100ml. Insurance and a valid British drivers license is compulsory.
